In a world where violence against corporate employees are increasing, forward thinking companies are realising the need to equip their employees with potentially life-saving information and training. The University of the Free State became the very first University in South Africa to enroll their employees in a C.O.B.R.A. Awareness Course. Employees learned how criminals think and select their victims, how criminals  give away pre-attack indicators before an attack starts, the 3 part secret formula criminals always control and the 3 part strategy that can be followed to hamper criminals.

Employees learned that screaming for help during a violent confrontation will most likely not help them and that most people do not want to become involved.  At the same time, screaming  for help places the victim in a “victim” mindset and reinforces the belief of the attacker that he is dominating and intimidating the victim. Staff also experienced how common beliefs such as owning a gun or kicking an attacker between the legs or having armed response as protection have very little value when you are suddenly confronted by a violent criminal determined to seriously injure or kill you. Staff had to sit for 60 seconds with their eyes closed to experience how long it felt and were then made aware that if a violent attack was taking place and they managed to press their panic button that another 6-10 minutes has to go by before the first help arrive (if they were lucky).  Staff members were shocked to realize how long this actually feels and realized that they require the physical skill set to to deal with the violent criminal until helps arrives.

A practical demonstration was done to show how common items such as a belt, music CD, shoes etc can be used as improvised weapons and how easy it is to use without the need for complicated physical skills.
